Gundog Field tests

Assessment Guidelines

The dog should demonstrate that it has been taught to retrieve with a clean pick up, no over-running or using the feet. The dog is required to mark the dummy/game, go out and return at a good speed. The dog is required to carry the dummy/game without damaging, mouthing or dropping it. The dog is required to deliver to hand and is not expected to sit. If the dog sits it must be at a suitable distance for the dummy to be delivered to hand without the trainer moving.

Blind retrieve - the dog to demonstrate the ability to locate the dummy/game by scent. The dog may be stopped and redirected but the trainer should not continually verbally cue the dog to hunt. The trainer must be able to show confidence that they can direct the dog to the correct location. The location will be given to the trainer at the beginning of the test. The trainer must remain stationary throughout the test. The blind retrieve must not be laid by the trainer and not in the sight of the dog. it will be therefore in three different locations to complete the test from level three onwards. All three can be laid at the same time.

Shot may be from a starting pistol or dummy launcher.

All equipment will be provided by the trainer.

Gundog tests will only be scheduled at Events with suitable outdoor facilities.

At all levels the dog must complete each exercise three times.

Gundog Level 1

The dog must be able to remain in a controlled sit by the trainer's side whilst a dummy is thrown and maintain this position whilst the trainer collects the dummy.

Gundog Level 2

The dog must retrieve a thrown dummy from at least 15m and deliver to hand. On one repetition must be accompanied by shot.

Gundog Level 3

The dog must be sent to retrieve a blind dummy. On one repetition must be fur or feather.

Dogs must follow through Levels 4, 5 and 6 with either Test A or Test B:

Gundog Level 4

Test A The dog must be sent to retrieve blind cold game with seen cold game in clear view.

Test B The dog must quarter for at least 5 minutes to caged game.

Gundog Level 5

Test A The dog must retrieve at least three different types of cold game. The retrieves will be a mixture of blind and seen at a distance no less than 15m.

Test B The dog must quarter to three different types of cold game and retrieve to hand.

Gundog Level 6

Test A The dog must jump over an obstacle and directed to retrieve blind, cold game and return over the obstacle.

Test B The dog must demonstrate a controlled point and flush, drop on cue, then search and retrieve.
